My illustration process varies depending on the complexity of the project. However generally this is a brief overview -
I will gather reference material from books, online, photographs or from life if possible.
Using the gathered reference and my imagination, I will start sketching either in my sketchbook or digitally.
Once I have worked out the composition and cleaned up the line work. I use a light box to transfer my sketch with a HB pencil to watercolour paper.
I begin painting with light watercolour washes, building up layer by layer until I achieve the desired result.

Inspiration can be found everywhere! Some of my favourite ways to find inspiration are:-
Walks in the countryside
Spending time in nature, looking for various, animals, plants and mushrooms.
Vintage children’s books
Reading
Other artists! A few that first spring to mind - Molly Brett, Jill Barklem, Beatrix Potter, Chris Dunn and many more!

Currently I use ‘Daniel Smith’ Watercolour paints (half pans)
My favourite paper is, Fabriano Artistico, 140lb (300gsm) cold pressed. It is 100% cotton, archival quality and acid-free.
For sketching I like Faber-Castell, series 9000 graphic pencils. Blackwing or Caran D’ache Grafwood.
Lately I’ve been using the Stillman & Birn Alpha series sketchbook. The paper is lovely and smooth and works well with pencils and light washes of watercolour.
